Is the Elf on the Shelf? Blogmas Day 2

Joining once again for Blogmas with Tamy over at Chasing My Life.

Today’s topic is the infamous Elf on the Shelf and whether we participate with it.

My answer is we do but quite casually. The craze didn’t really exist when G was little. And he thinks the whole idea of the elf is quite creepy. I can’t completely disagree though I mostly just threaten that it’s next placement will be to watch him sleep.

We didn’t actually get “Buddy” our elf until J was in the 5th grade and came home telling us about the one in his teacher’s classroom. So for us, it’s been mostly about moving the elf and finding him each morning. Not about any thing else. Just for fun. And I don’t start on December 1 (or earlier!). One word for you stressed out parents worrying about a whole month of shenanigan’s: snowstorm!  Poor Buddy was often lost in a snowstorm on the way to our house. I doubt I’d change that even if the kids were little.

It’s a fun tradition for us because it’s mostly no stress and even G eventually came around and helped with the elf once in a while.

Does an elf sit upon your shelf at Christmas time?

  1. Ugh, I can’t stand that whole Elf On A Shelf trend. Thankfully my boys were already older before that ever got popular. I do have an ancient elf that was around for as far back in my childhood as I can remember. He’s green and red with his his little felt legs tucked up. He ALWAYS hung on a bottom branch of the tree, near the trunk, and my mom said he was watching over the presents to be sure no one snooped. THAT is the tradition I stick with to this day. (I will get a pic of him posted on my blog once I finally … eventually … get my tree decorated.)

    1. Well, I think the Elf on the Shelf of my childhood was my mom standing at the rotary phone threatening to call Santa and cancel Christmas so… I think as long as it’s all in good fun but it probably would be a stressful things with small kids. Love the story of the ancient elf, looking forward to seeing the pic.

  2. LMBO at the snowstorm idea and especially at the “watching him sleep” idea! I agree the elf is a bit creepy – that’s why we usually had a “friendlier” looking elf paired with a fun reindeer buddy for the munchkins. Buddy reminded me of Chucky for some reason.

    1. Ha, he does look a little like Chucky! The whole idea of the Elf watching is a bit creepy, I’d probably scrap that part of it for young kids. It is fun to think of new places/scenes for him though.
