Snow Bird and Birds in the Snow

A snowstorm greeted us on the first day of the year around here. I was happy as I recalled last year starting with a beautiful day. An opposite start to the year means an opposite kind of year, right?

We had lots of warnings about our storm so I’d stocked my bird feeders early. I think the birds were happy about that.

Did I cheat and sprinkle some bird seed on the deck rail for better close-up photos? Maybe.

And did other persons in the house complain when I opened the door for these shots? Loudly. Still, look at all those cardinals!  Worth the cold breeze to capture them on camera. Not all pictured but I counted around 13.

So many birds to start off 2021, a good sign indeed!

Last year’s news (earlier in the week):

The hawk returned to our backyard. And though not pictured, seemed to be enjoying a songbird dinner. I think the squirrels were all too fat for him to carry. Must be their defense, eat all the bird seed and become too heavy for the hawks.

Other birds spotted during 2020 and into the new year: a pair of blue jays (hoping for decent photos soon), chickadees, tufted titmice, robins, crows, nuthatches, red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, and Carolina wrens.

What birds did you spot to end the old year and begin the new one?

P.S.

In case you’re wondering, I used to blog at So Not Organized but switched over for the new year to a brand new blog. Needed to change hosting so started fresh. Still me and still planning on sharing birdwatching posts each week.

  1. Hi Jean. I’m not envious of your snow but I am rather jealous of all those Cardinals. What a wonderful wa6y to add colour to a grey, snowy scene. Happy New Year to you and yours from here in England.

    1. Thank you! While I’m not usually a fan of the snow, I must admit we tend to get more birds around our feeders when it happens. Happy New Year to you as well!

  2. Hello Jean,

I like your new blog. It is awesome seeing all those Cardinals. They do look lovely in the snow.
I hope your song birds stay safe from the Hawk. My yard birds seem to know when to go into hiding.
Great photos. Happy New Year to you and your family. Have a great day and a happy new week!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I love seeing all the cardinals especially thinking of the sayings about them being lost loved ones visiting. Brings me a lot of comfort (especially since my late father was one of the main ones to get me into bird watching). Happy New Year and new week (hope it’s a great one) to you as well!

  3. Hawks need to eat too! Look at all thise gorgeous cardinals!! So many in one grouping. I’d be okay with the door open for a photo shoot any day.
I want to be positive that 2021 will be better than 2020! Happy New Year & thanks for sharing your first birding post for the year!!

    1. Yes, the hawks do also need to eat. I suppose it’s bad of me to wish they’d feast on squirrel instead of songbird? SIGH. I’m a little grumpy with the squirrels because they broke one of my bird feeders over the weekend. Happy New Year! And yes, I also want to be positive for a better 2021.

    1. Thank you! Probably need to get some sort of feeder for the deck rail, saw a photo shared on the news where the woman had set out an iron skillet filled with birdseed. Seemed clever. Could’ve been a feeder designed to look like one though.
